Catch & Release

Thumbnail Higher or Lower

Does the video on the right have more or fewer views than the one on the left?

How to use it

  1. Look at the left video. Its view count is shown.
  2. Guess for the right video. Press Higher if you think it has more views, Lower if you think it has fewer.
  3. Keep the streak going. Every correct guess makes the right video the new reference. One wrong guess ends the game.
  4. Save your score to the leaderboard if you like, or share it and challenge a friend.

What the game teaches you about thumbnails

Views are not decided by video quality alone. A title and thumbnail decide whether anyone clicks at all. Playing a few rounds trains your eye for what a strong package looks like and for the signals that suggest a video will beat its channel’s usual numbers.

That gap between a video and its channel’s normal performance is the basis of an outlier, a video that does several times better than the channel usually does. Studying outliers is one of the fastest ways to find ideas that already work.

Tips for a longer streak

About the data

The game uses a snapshot of real, public view counts from recent long-form uploads by a mix of English- and German-language channels. Numbers are as of the date shown under the game and keep growing on YouTube. Thumbnails, titles and channel names belong to their creators, and Catch & Release is not affiliated with them.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the view counts come from?

From public YouTube data. We take a snapshot of recent long-form videos from a selection of channels and show the date under the game. The real numbers on YouTube keep changing.

Does the game store my score?

Your best streak stays in your browser. Nothing is sent to us unless you choose to save a score to the leaderboard. Then only the name you typed and your score are stored and shown publicly, with no account and no email.

How does the leaderboard work?

After a game you can optionally add a name and save your score. There is a weekly board that resets every Monday and an all-time board. Scores come from your browser, so treat the board as friendly competition. Inappropriate names are removed.

What happens if two videos have nearly the same views?

The game avoids close calls early on and gets harder as your streak grows. View counts are shown rounded, for example 1.2M. Equal view counts count as correct either way.

Why does the right video sometimes have a different language?

The pool mixes English and German channels. A thumbnail and an idea can usually be judged without reading every word.

Is the game free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on how often you play.

Are the videos shown in a random order?

Yes. Videos are picked at random, with the difficulty rising as your streak grows.

Stop guessing what works on YouTube.

Catch & Release tracks your competitors 24/7 and alerts you the moment one of their videos breaks out, so you can adapt a proven idea while it is still hot.
