How to use it

  1. Paste your script into the box. Or skip it and type a target length to see how many words you need.
  2. Pick your pace. Choose calm, natural or fast, or type your own words per minute.
  3. Read the result. You get the spoken time, the word count and how far you are from your target.
  4. Measure your real pace. Press “Measure my pace”, read your script aloud and stop the timer. The calculator sets your actual words per minute.

How many words is a YouTube video?

It depends on how fast you talk. People usually speak at roughly 140 to 160 words per minute in natural English. Technical explanations tend to be slower, around 120. Quick overview videos can reach 180. That is why a 10-minute video can be anywhere from 1,200 to 1,800 words.

Use the natural column as a starting point, then measure your own pace with the timer above. Your real number is the only one that matters.

Why the script length is worth knowing before you film

A script that runs long forces you to rush the delivery or cut scenes you already shot. A script that runs short leaves you padding the middle. Knowing the spoken time before you record saves you from both, and it makes planning B-roll, music and chapters much easier.

The finished video is rarely identical to the estimate. Editing removes breaths and filler words, which shortens it. Visual beats, music and pauses between sections make it longer. If you cut tightly, expect the final video to land a little under the spoken time. Use the pause field to account for scene breaks.

Tips for writing a script that sounds good

Frequently asked questions

How many words per minute should I speak in a YouTube video?

Most creators land between 140 and 160 words per minute in English. Slower, around 120, suits technical or dense topics. Faster, around 180, works for quick overviews. The best pace is the one that sounds natural to you, so measure it with the timer.

How many words is a 10-minute YouTube video?

About 1,500 words at a natural pace of 150 words per minute. That is roughly 1,200 words at a calm pace and 1,800 at a fast pace.

Does the calculator count pauses and B-roll?

Yes, if you want it to. Enter the seconds of pause you plan to leave per paragraph and the spoken time includes them.

Is my script stored or uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. The text is kept in your browser’s local storage so your draft is still there when you come back, and you can clear it with one click.

Why is my finished video shorter or longer than the estimate?

Editing usually trims breaths and filler words, which makes the video shorter. Music, B-roll beats and pauses between sections add time. Treat the estimate as the spoken length of the raw take.

Does it work for languages other than English?

Yes. It counts words in any language. Pace differs by language, though, so adjust the words per minute or measure your own. German, for example, has longer words, so the same minute holds fewer of them.
