YouTube thumbnail size and file size requirements
These are the requirements YouTube lists for custom video thumbnails (checked October 2026 on YouTube Help):
| Requirement | |
|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 |
| Resolution | 3840 × 2160 recommended, minimum width 640 px. 1280 × 720 is a common, sharp choice. |
| File size | Up to 2 MB when uploading from mobile, up to 50 MB from desktop |
| Format | JPG or PNG |
| Shorts thumbnails | 9:16, 2160 × 3840 recommended, minimum height 640 px, desktop upload only |
For the channel banner, YouTube recommends 2560 × 1440 px and keeps text and logos safe in a central area of about 1546 × 423 px. The profile picture is shown as a circle, and 800 × 800 px is the recommended size.
Custom thumbnails need a verified YouTube account. The limits can change, so the YouTube Help page for custom thumbnails is the final word.
Why 2 MB is still a good target
The 2 MB limit applies when you upload from a phone or tablet, and a smaller file also loads faster for viewers. At 1280 × 720, a JPG around 80 to 90 percent quality usually looks identical to the original at a fraction of the size. The tool searches for the highest quality that fits, so you do not have to guess.
Tips for sharper thumbnails
- Start big. Export your design at 1920 × 1080 or larger, then resize. Enlarging a small image makes it soft.
- Crop to 16:9 first. Use Fill and drag the image so faces and text stay inside the frame.
- Use JPG for photos, PNG for flat graphics. Photos compress far better as JPG. If a PNG is too large, the tool switches to JPG automatically.
- Check it small. Most views start on a phone. Try the squint test and the safe zone tool before you upload.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
16:9 is required for video thumbnails. 1280 × 720 pixels is the classic size, and YouTube recommends up to 3840 × 2160 with a minimum width of 640 pixels.
What is the maximum file size for a YouTube thumbnail?
According to YouTube Help, 2 MB when uploading from mobile and 50 MB from desktop. Staying under 2 MB works everywhere, which is why it is the default here.
Does compressing the image reduce quality?
JPG compression is lossy, but at high quality settings the difference is not visible at thumbnail size. The tool picks the highest quality that fits your limit and shows the quality it used.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The image is resized and compressed in your browser with the canvas API. It never leaves your device.
Why is part of my image cut off?
If your image is not 16:9, filling the frame means cropping the edges. Drag the image to choose what stays, lower the zoom, or switch to Fit to keep the whole picture with blurred bars.
Can I make a channel banner or profile picture too?
Yes. Choose Channel banner (2560 × 1440) or Profile picture (800 × 800) from the target list. Keep important content inside the central safe area of the banner.
